Automotive Ignition Interlock Devices
Learn About Breathalyzer Car Ignition Interlocks.
Ignition interlock devices are mandatory for first and second DUI convictions in many states. If you're required to have a breathalyzer interlock installed in your car, then you may want to shop around. These devices cost hundreds of dollars to install, and may also come with monthly maintenance or leasing fees. You may have a choice in interlock installation, or they may only be sold through bail bond agencies, licensed interlock dealers, and court-appointed installers. DUI breathalyzer interlocks work by getting a reading on your blood alcohol content (BAC) and refusing to start your car if you're intoxicated or have alcohol traces on your breath.
There are some arguments against ignition interlocks, mainly stating that they might be circumvented. For instance, you could have another person breathe into it for you, or you could leave your car running while you're at the bar. However, expecting a sober passenger to allow you to drive home drunk does not always make sense, and the penalties for helping people defeat such a device can be very stiff. For repeat offenders, the ignition interlock device can prevent dangerous drunk drivers on the road, which is why more and more states are requiring it.
